The Rollercoaster

Life, in case any of you hadn't yet noticed, is one big roller-coaster ride. Yeah, we've all seen Parenthood, we know the metaphor is apt; but really, I can't think of a better one.

It's one big roller-coaster ride, with a whole mess of smaller roller-coaster rides (family, relationships, work, school, kids, whatever...) going on within the larger one. You know... just to keep things interesting.

Finding Patrick late last year was a major "up" phase for me. It was exciting and fun and sexually and emotionally charged - and we both lived this year to the fullest. We took advantage of any time we could grab together and really enjoyed each other. He is probably one of my best friends besides everything else.

We had a rough summer. With the near disaster of being discovered just barely averted, we were very cautious. I found myself feeling a little distant. He'd hurt me and I wasn't keen on repeating the experience. I started to look for other diversions - some balance, if you will. I clearly needed to find some distance from this relationship if it had the power to devastate me in this way.

About this time is when Aiden re-entered my life, and he proved to be just what I needed to help me find that balance. More on him tomorrow.

As summer became autumn, Patrick began heating things up again. He started to talk about trying things we had never ventured into before. He started to exercise his dominance and we started to have long talks about D/s play. He was curious about it, sensed that I was interested, and wanted to try playing with it in the bedroom.

By November, we were almost back to the same intensity as the spring. He had started chatting with me via his phone again; and though I had concerns about it, like an idiot I went along.

The middle of December marked our one year anniversary - sort of an arbitrary date that we settled on, but it was the first time we went beyond simple kissing, so it seemed fitting. He actually managed a few hours away from work, and even brought me a flower to commemorate the occasion.

Everything was ticking along nicely.

Now, a little background:

There had been an episode in late September where his wife had texted my phone (!!) wanting to know who I was and what my relationship was with her husband. He dealt with it, coming down on her her pretty hard for pirating my number off his phone, and for invading the privacy of a "casual friend". I protested at the time, knowing that if he was ever found out, it would spell complete disaster for him; but he maintained that he had to react as if I was a casual friend.

Well, Dear Readers... can anyone guess what happened? No bonus points for this one... it's just too easy.

On Christmas Day, during that lull between gift madness and dinner chaos, we were chatting. Nothing too extreme, but definitely our usual sexy banter. At some point, unbeknownst to me, he went outside to shovel snow.

Leaving his Blackberry on the kitchen counter.

In plain view.

Not even set to Silent, kids! Seriously!! How dumb do you need to be?

Needless to say, the conversation was seen by his wife, and all hell broke loose at his house. The fallout included their children being told on Christmas Day that their father was leaving and that they would never see him again. Now, I do have some sympathy for her (though not much); but saying something like that to your kids seems a whole lot more like punishing them than getting revenge on your spouse. How to ruin Christmas for your children for all eternity in one easy step - way to go lady.

In addition, I got two text messages from him. They were along the lines of, "I can't believe you would send something like that to me. I am 100% committed to my family," and, "There can be no further contact between us. Don't reply." I have no doubt about who those messages came from, but they stung all the same.

In the end, he's still there. I don't know how he managed it, but he's still there. Probably those two text messages had something to do with it. He's since sent me a couple emails, full of anguish and apologies and pleas for understanding. My replies have made it clear that I'm also hurt and angry; and in my last one, requested that he not contact me again before January 11. At that point we can talk. I'll have my head on straighter, and will be able to see things much clearer.

At this point, it looks like cutting him loose entirely is my only option. I hate like hell to do it - he is one of my very closest friends, and one of a very few who knows me - all of me - everything - and loves me anyways; but I can't see any way to keep him in my life. It's too dangerous for me. Besides, if he's 100% committed to sorting out his marriage, then he needs to be just that. And he can't be if he's talking to me at all.

I'm truly torn. He's such a big part of my day-to-day life that not having him to talk to will leave a huge void. The whole thing just makes me sad. I don't want to be selfish (at the peril of both of our marriages), but I hate letting him go too.

This roller-coaster just hit bottom.

Sending some hugs to you. What a scary part of the roller coaster to be on! It almost makes it worse when you can see it coming. But, that being said, I think your head is in the right place. Sadly, it sucks more when the head and heart aren't on the same page.
Hugs!

You are probably best to let him go and find someone who can focus on you without sharing. But that sounds tough.

I am sending losts of virtual *kisses* and *hugs* your way from across the pond Ms Scarlett baby - they may not go too far in helping you feel better but that's all I can do...

It is very hard to let someone go but the fact that you are still doing so rather than being selfish and hanging onto someone who you care about shows just how much of a good person you are as many a woman in your situation would only think of themselves and hang on to Patrick for dear life...

On another note I certainly agree with you that Mrs Patrick chose an inappropriate manner (and time!) to react as she did with the children...

XOXO as always,

Wifey

This os a tough situation, but You're making the right choice. And if the tables were turned, I'd expect him to do no less. It's just part of the deal when dabbling with married folks. There may come a time when they have to choose.

Oddly though, this is why I ONLY talk with married people, I understand and expect that whatever relationship we have is secondary to their spouse, which means it's less likely that they'll start making demands I'm unwilling to meet right? Or so I tell myself.

Hope it all works out. Hopefully it will be remembered as a fun adventure.

Oh no...I am so sorry. I hope the new year brings new adventures - but more importantly, comfort and forgiveness for all involved. *HUGS!!*

Reading this is... painful & emotional.

Even though my situation is a bit different, but with similar aspects (such as diversions, being hurt, afraid of falling into the same pattern, etc.), I feel January will present us both with some tough decisions to make.

My lover once told me that if the bad outweighs the good in a relation (more than average), then it's time to rethink it... Is this what you feel is happening?

I can't imagine letting go of someone I love, who happens to be my best secret friend. I just can't.

Thinking of you. Sending you hugs, comfort & courage.

WR ~ Sounds good (and less depressing) to me!!

Emmy ~ You're so right. It would be nice if I could make my heart agree with my head on this one, but sadly I don't think that will happen. Hugs gratefully accepted!

Trooper ~ It aint easy - that's for sure.

Wifey ~ I appreciate the care... and the kind words. It's a real boost to my spirits. I have no idea what could have been going through Mrs Patrick's head to make her think that was thing to do, but it's not far from her usual M.O.

Roaring Lion ~ I agree totally on talking to married people. They tend to be more realistic for sure. Thanks for the vote of confidence... I know I'm glad to have had him in my life.

Unbroken ~ I hope you're right on all counts!

Spring Flower ~ The bad outweighing the good is just what's happening, and that's why we are where we are now. I haven't wrapped my head around letting him go yet, but I will. Thanks for the hugs...

Redheaded Ridinghood ~ Thanks... I think my decision is pretty much made.

I don't know what advice to give you here except to say that while it will ache for awhile if you have to let him go, you have to let him go.

*hugs*

This hurt to read even though I'm not involved with any of the parties involved. I'm sorry it happened and sorry for the havoc it wreaked with both your lives.

I hope you are able to pick up the pieces and go onward without too much trouble. I do think you are better off cutting loose from him, hurt though it may. Not that you asked for my advice, of course. :)

Happy New Year to you. May it bring you much warmth and happiness.

Tough situation Scarlett, but I think you are handling it as well as you can. Look back on the good parts and know that 2010 will bring brighter days. (Hug)

Ms. Scarlett,

So sorry about your anguish. I have a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach for you even though I haven't gone through this. It's always lurking out there for us, isn't it? The highs are so high; sounds like the lows are equally low.

Take heart and move forward in strength.

Dear Ms. Scarlett,

I think you are too good for this situation. You shouldn't be number two. You are worth so much more than that. I can totally relate to this and I think you deserve total love and dedication.

Wow.. I don't even know where to start. I started stumbling through your blog today and found this one and my heart sank as I read it. I felt awful on soooo many levels. it brought up every bit of anguish from my separation and divorce. I was typing a response to a friend, a woman I had known for 20 years. We were having an emotional affair and had not yet met in person. However, I had my head phones in and did not know my wife had woken up and was standing behind me until I got hit. The anxiety of just remember that night is still hard. However, she would never let up on me and eventually that just drove me away. Then there was all the awful things she did to my friend. having my teenage daughter calling her, threats, calls to her husband, her husband's work and of course dragging it all out in front of the kids.

There were a lot of big mistakes made on both sides, but I understand she was out of her mind at the time and I don't hold it against her. I tried to put myself in her shoes.

My friend and I never did get together except for a short 5 minutes this summer in which she totally and completely rejected having me come visit her (She was separated from her husband at the time).

To this day so much damage was done I can't even have a conversation with her anymore. I send her an occasional well wish for the holidays which is usually returned by a short thank you. This post is was actually kind of hard for me , but I get it. I wanted her so bad and now it will never be and I get to go on alone.
