"I Suspect She's...

...as Fragrant as Spring...

I'm starting to think Spring is never going to arrive. I know it's not late yet, but this has seemed like The Longest Winter Ever. Early snow, brutally cold weather, record temperatures and record snow accumulations... it's all added up to make this the worst Winter in most people's memory.

But Spring, when it arrives, is one of my favourite times of year. One day soon (I have faith!!), I will step outside and it will hit me. That wonderful smell... melting snow, and long dormant earth and grass, and the sun will feel warm, and I will have to stop and just take a few deep breaths to drink it in.

That moment never fails to put a happy smile on my face.

...as Ripe as Summer...

Summer used to be my least favourite time of year. I know, nuts, right? But I was a bigger girl then, and heat played havoc with me. I'd overheat, there would be chafing, and I'd have to plan all my activities around the presence of adequate air conditioning and ice-cold beverages.

Now, I love the heat. I soak it up like a sponge. I'm not quite one of those skinny girls who are cold all the time, but I truly now appreciate the melting heat... the smell of a garden bursting with life, the pleasure of a light breeze winding its way through my hair.

Heaven.

...as Sad as Autumn...

Fall is still my very favourite time of year. The crispness of the days, the leaves turning colour, the lack of bugs, the way the skies look all golden and hazy with the dust from the harvest (yeah, I'm a Prairie girl).

But Fall is also kind of melancholy too... that sense of things winding down, of the approaching cold. It's no coincidence that my relationship with Patrick fell apart finally in the Fall. A beautiful and wistful time of year, is Autumn...

... and as Coldly Possessed as Winter."

And, oh, how Winter has possessed us this year. People always wonder how we can "forget" what Winter is like (as evidenced by all those twits who forget how to drive in the snow every year), but I think we actually block it out. It's one big episode of denial, that's what it is.

*****

That quote was written by a writer named David Thomson about his favourite Hollywood actress - Nicole Kidman. I read it in a newspaper review of his slightly creepy, certainly stalker-y book about Ms. Kidman a couple weeks ago, and it's been rattling around in my head ever since.

As a tall, fair-skinned redhead woman, I have inevitably spent a lot of time in the 90's being told that I look like Nicole Kidman. I was always flattered, but have never seen even a hint of resemblance, aside from the red hair. Once she went blonde, I didn't hear that anymore. (Though I'm very happy to see she's gone back to red... it suits her so beautifully)

The quote finally inspired this post when it turned up again, in an email from Aiden, shortly after he'd left my hotel room (yes, a post about that is in the works), saying that he'd just read the very same review and that the quote made him think of me.

Le sigh...

Every season has it's place, and I hope you find joy in all of them.

It's good to hear from you again.

I can't wait for summer...its been a long, dreadful, snowy winter for me as well. I do wonder how one "forgets" how to drive in the snow every winter, but there always seems to be people who forget despite going through it year after year.

I agree about Nicole Kidman too. Red hair does suit her much, much better.

As a Canadian, I can't help but laugh at your comment on winter driving. I totally agree! Not to mention the thawing of idiots in spring. LOL

Yeah, fall/autumn for me has been nothing but endings or wrong choices that led to endings. Ugh.

I'm glad you (and spring) are back. :))

I have a love/hate thing with all seasons, but I can't agree more with wanting to be "...as Fragrant as Spring..."

And you're right. That, as a quote, seems a little creepy!
